How old were you when you first started playing poker? No, not with your grandfather, but professionally! In Daniel Negreanu’s case, this happened at the age of 21. Daniel decided to leave home for Las Vegas and become a professional poker player, which as it would turn out was probably the best decision of his life. Although poker has been everything to Daniel Negreanu, cards just weren’t Daniels’s game before he turned 21. As a teenager, his winning instincts pushed him towards becoming a professional pool player. Fortunately for Daniel, his dreams were not fulfilled. He abandoned everything that was known to him and started playing illegal poker games around Toronto, Canada. Daniel’s skilful play became more and more apparent at the tables. Unfortunately, his skills didn't garner him any true mainstream success until 1998, when he entered the World Series of Poker for the very first time. He won a bracelet in the Pot Limit Texas Hold’em and became the youngest world champion so far at only 23 years of age. Similar to Stu Ungar’s nick, “the Kid”, Negreanu earned the callsign “Poker Kid” because of his accomplishment. The following year in 1999, Negreanu joined the United States Poker Championship and beat all of his opponents with a huge stack. Two years later, he managed to finish at 11th place at the World Series of Poker main no-limit event. Negreanu, who became a dollar millionaire in just a couple years, decided to play at as many events as possible. In 2004, he proved once again that he is one of the best players in the world. He scored yet another World Series of Poker bracelet and ended in the money at five other WSOP events. Additionally, his entry at Five Diamond World Poker Classic made him more than a million richer. As if that wasn’t enough, Daniel swept the floor at the Borgata Poker Open. For his major accomplishments, Daniel was awarded the Player of the Year by ESPN. CardPlayer Magazine saw the very same glow in him and pronounced him as the best player in the world. All in all, his accomplishments have made him the second richest poker tournament player ever. Whenever Daniel is “off the court”, he writes columns for CardPlayer Magazine. Additionally, he made Doyle Brunson’s book Super/System 2 even more valuable by putting in quite a few words of wisdom in it. You will find his good advice in the strategy sections. Besides being a professional poker player, a columnist and a book contributor, Daniel helps those who can afford him with his tutoring skills. I don’t know how much actor Tobey Maguire paid him for his lessons, but it is assumed that Maguire is quite the generous guy. While Daniel still plays poker, reality caught up with him. He has accomplished so much more than most poker players ever will. His name has become a trademark and it is worth mentioning that his skills can be tested in Stacked, a video game with 3D interactivity and a bunch of celebrities who you can play against in a real time environment. You will notice that he looks very much like in the real life, either with a fancy suit or a sports team jacket and cap, as he is a big fan of everything that includes balls and pucks. |
